Unveiling the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: A True Performance EV
Hyundai, known for its exceptional vehicles, has introduced its first electric vehicle (EV) under the performance-focused N division. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, based on the award-winning standard Ioniq 5, aims to capture the attention of driving enthusiasts by showcasing the thrilling capabilities of electric vehicles. Recently unveiled at the prestigious 2023 Goodwood Festival Of Speed, the Ioniq 5 N is expected to be the first N-badged Hyundai to arrive in India. Let’s dive into the exciting details of this remarkable performance EV.
Striking Design and Enhanced Proportions
Compared to the standard model, the Ioniq 5 N boasts a more aggressive appearance with subtle design enhancements. With a 20 mm lower stance, 50 mm wider body to accommodate wider tires, and an 80 mm increase in length, the Ioniq 5 N exudes a commanding presence. While maintaining the iconic styling cues, such as the captivating ‘parametric pixel’ lighting elements, the front bumper now incorporates functional air curtains and additional vents for improved cooling. The presence of side skirts, a wing-type rear spoiler, and a pronounced diffuser further enhance the aerodynamic profile. Rolling on impressive 21-inch forged aluminum wheels and 275/35R21 Pirelli P-Zero tires, the Ioniq 5 N ensures a striking visual impression. Additionally, it will be available in the signature ‘Performance Blue’ shade with the option of a matte finish.
Electrifying Powertrain Performance
At the heart of the Ioniq 5 N lies its exhilarating powertrain. Unlike the India-spec model, which features a 72.6 kWh battery, the Ioniq 5 N is equipped with a larger 84 kWh battery pack. Notably, this advanced battery incorporates an enhanced thermal management system with upgraded cooling capabilities, ensuring efficient performance even under demanding conditions.
The Ioniq 5 N employs two permanent magnet motors, one on each axle, delivering a combined power output of over 600 bhp. The front motor provides a peak power of 223 bhp, while the more powerful rear motor boasts a peak power of 378 bhp. Engaging the ‘N Grin Boost’ mode unleashes an impressive total power output of 641 bhp for exhilarating bursts of acceleration. Accelerating from 0-100 kmph in just 3.4 seconds and achieving a top speed of 260 kmph, the Ioniq 5 N offers unmatched performance. While exact range figures are yet to be disclosed, the Ioniq 5 N can charge up to 80 percent in a remarkable 18 minutes using a 350 kW DC fast-charger.
Uncompromising Braking Power
Hyundai has paid meticulous attention to the braking system of the Ioniq 5 N. This high-performance EV features the most powerful braking setup ever seen on a road-going Hyundai vehicle. Equipped with massive 400 mm disc brakes up front, accompanied by four-piston monobloc calipers, and 360 mm disc brakes at the rear, the Ioniq 5 N ensures exceptional stopping power. Additionally, Hyundai has incorporated a model-specific regenerative braking system, enabling the Ioniq 5 N to achieve impressive deceleration forces up to 0.6 G using regenerative braking alone. By minimizing mechanical brake usage, Hyundai reduces the risk of brake fade caused by the vehicle’s weight. While the exact kerb weight of the Ioniq 5 N remains undisclosed, Hyundai’s focus on performance and safety is evident.
Performance-Driven Features for Track Enthusiasts
To cater to track enthusiasts, Hyundai has equipped the Ioniq 5 N with innovative features that enhance the overall driving experience. The track state-of-charge (SOC) function calculates energy consumption per lap, providing valuable insights for optimizing performance. The N Battery Preconditioning system allows drivers to choose between ‘Drag’ mode for bursts of full power or ‘Track’ mode, which optimizes the battery temperature for prolonged track sessions. Furthermore, the N Race function offers the choice between ‘Endurance’ and ‘Sprint’ modes, allowing drivers to select their preferred power delivery characteristics for various scenarios.
Refined Interior with Enhanced Comfort
Inside the Ioniq 5 N, occupants can enjoy a refined cabin designed for maximum comfort and support during spirited drives. The upgraded center console features knee pads and shin support, complemented by a sliding armrest. The N bucket seats boast reinforced bolsters to provide optimal lateral support, ensuring a thrilling yet comfortable driving experience.
The Future Arrival of the Ioniq 5 N in India
Automotive enthusiasts in India can anticipate the arrival of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N in 2024 as a halo model. However, considering it will likely be a full import, it is important to note that the Ioniq 5 N will not be positioned as an entry-level offering.
Prepare to Embrace the Electric Performance Revolution
With the debut of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, the world of performance EVs takes a significant leap forward. Hyundai’s commitment to delivering captivating design, exhilarating performance, and advanced technologies is evident in this exceptional vehicle. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the Ioniq 5 N represents an exciting glimpse into the future of electric performance.
