Vietnam’s VinFast Gears Up for India’s EV Boom
Vietnamese automaker VinFast is set to revolutionize India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector with its strategic expansion plans. The company has announced its entry into the Indian market by 2026, introducing a lineup of affordable EVs. The rollout will commence with the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly of the VF7 SUV and VF6 crossover during the festive season of 2025. Despite setbacks like recent flooding in Tamil Nadu, the construction of VinFast’s manufacturing plant remains on track, reinforcing its commitment to timely launches.
In an exclusive interview with Autocar India, Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast’s Asia operations, detailed the company’s market approach. “Our goal is to introduce the VF7 as a premium mid-segment SUV, appealing to India’s aspirational middle-class buyers. Once we establish a foothold, we will expand to more budget-friendly models, including the ultra-affordable VF3 in 2026.” This gradual introduction of models enables VinFast to establish brand credibility before diving into mass-market segments.

Premium First: A Strategic Approach to Market Penetration
VinFast’s Indian roadmap starts with the VF7 SUV, positioned as the flagship model. While the company offers larger vehicles like the VF8 and VF9 globally, the VF7 is tailored to India’s growing demand for premium yet affordable EVs.
Key Launch Plans:
VF7 SUV (2025): Initial CKD production capacity of 50,000 units, scalable up to 150,000 units.
VF6 & VF3 (2026): Targeting the high-demand budget EV segment.
Flexible Manufacturing: The Tamil Nadu facility will accommodate multiple right-hand-drive models, including the VF5 and e34, catering to diverse consumer needs.
“Our objective is to offer premium features at competitive prices,” said Chau. “We’re building trust first before introducing budget models.”

Cost Optimization: The CKD Advantage
To ensure affordability, VinFast will begin production with CKD assembly, wherein semi-assembled kits will be imported and finalized locally. The Tamil Nadu plant will house crucial facilities, including body, paint, and assembly shops, optimizing costs while avoiding the complexities of full-scale manufacturing initially.
Why CKD Works for VinFast:
Lower Taxation: Import duties on semi-knocked-down kits are significantly lower than fully built vehicles.
Faster Market Penetration: Accelerates production timelines, making it possible to launch models sooner.
Local Sourcing: Partnerships with Indian suppliers for components like batteries, interiors, and electronic parts.
“CKD isn’t about leveraging government benefits but optimizing the Bill of Materials (BoM). Localizing battery packs alone can achieve 30–40% domestic content, making our EVs even more cost-effective,” explained Chau.
Brand Awareness in India’s Competitive EV Space
India’s EV market is highly competitive, with established brands like Tata, Mahindra, and emerging players like BYD gaining traction. VinFast plans to leverage its parent company, Vingroup—a major Vietnamese conglomerate—to build credibility.
Branding and Expansion Strategy:
Vingroup’s Reputation: Showcasing its success in sectors like hospitality, retail, and tech to reinforce reliability.
Urban-First Focus: Targeting metro cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, where EV infrastructure is well-developed.
Phased Rollout: Avoiding low-demand regions initially to focus on high-adoption areas.
“Many Indians recognize Vingroup from their travels to Vietnam. We will amplify this familiarity through strategic marketing,” Chau highlighted.
A Practical Approach to Dealerships
Unlike competitors investing heavily in high-end showrooms, VinFast will prioritize service quality and digital integration over glamour.
Dealership Strategy:
Compact Outlets: Cost-effective dealership models to maintain competitive pricing.
Customer-Centric Service: Well-trained staff offering test drives, charging solutions, and after-sales support.
Online Accessibility: Seamless digital platforms for bookings and virtual consultations.
“We believe customers shouldn’t bear the cost of extravagant showrooms. Instead, we focus on post-purchase experience,” Chau emphasized.
Challenges & Opportunities
While VinFast’s entry into India is ambitious, several challenges lie ahead:
Price Sensitivity: Finding the balance between premium offerings and affordability.
Charging Infrastructure: Expanding charging networks beyond metropolitan areas.
Market Competition: Competing against local and international EV players already present in India.
However, the brand sees substantial opportunities:
Government Support: Benefiting from subsidies under FAME II and state-specific EV policies.
First-Mover Advantage: Offering premium EVs at accessible price points before other global brands.
A New Era for India’s EV Market
VinFast’s strategic entry into India with its premium-first, affordability-next approach sets the stage for a disruptive presence in the EV sector. By leveraging localized manufacturing, a strong brand reputation, and customer-focused services, the company aims to make electric mobility more accessible without compromising quality.
As Chau succinctly put it, “We are here to stay, and our phased expansion ensures that India grows alongside us.”
With a robust roadmap and the Tamil Nadu plant gearing up for production, VinFast is poised to electrify Indian roads—one EV at a time.
