MG Comet EV vs Tata Tiago EV: Which is the Best Entry-Level Electric Car for City Runs?
Are you in the market for an affordable electric car for your city commutes? If yes, then you might want to take a closer look at the new MG Comet EV and the Tata Tiago EV. These two electric cars are closely matched on price and range, but which one offers the better overall package? In this quick comparison, we will take a closer look at both cars to help you make an informed decision.

Recently, MG Motors India disclosed the pricing of their latest electric car, the MG Comet EV. It is designed for city usage and is considered an entry-level vehicle. The initial costs of the MG Comet EV are Rs 71,000 less than its closest rival, the Tata Tiago EV. Both electric hatchbacks offer a range of features to enhance their appeal. In this comparison, we will be pitting the MG Comet EV against the base model of the Tata Tiago XE (MR), which is presently the most affordable electric city car.
Comparison of MG Comet EV and Tata Tiago EV: Price
The MG Comet EV has been introduced at an initial cost of Rs 7.98 lakh (ex-showroom, all over India). The car is obtainable in a single trim version with five color choices, such as Starry Black, Aurora Silver, Candy White, dual-tone Candy White and Starry Black, and dual-tone Apple Green and Starry Black. Additionally, customers will be able to customize their cars with skins and wraps, which can result in over 250 possible combinations. MG Motors India will start conducting test drives for the MG Comet EV starting from April 27th, 2023. Bookings for the vehicle will begin on May 15th, 2023. The deliveries are anticipated to commence by the end of May 2023.

The Tata Tiago EV was released at an initial price of Rs 8.49 lakh (ex-showroom) for its XE base model, which is applicable for the first 20,000 bookings. The cost for the same version has been revised and is currently Rs 8.69 lakh (ex-showroom). Surprisingly, the base XE trim is only offered in the Pristine White paint shade while higher variants come in a total of five paint shade options.
Comparison of MG Comet EV vs Tata Tiago EV: Design
One of the first things that will catch your attention with the MG Comet EV is its unconventional styling. It is a tiny car with three doors instead of five and has an odd tall-boy styling. Nevertheless, the small size of the vehicle does not affect the interior space, and according to MG, even people who are six feet tall can sit comfortably for short trips. The MG Comet EV showcases exclusive design features, including the possibility of a two-tone paint color, linked LED light bars on the front and back, chrome design components, and streamlined wheel covers. The poppy color options and customization options are also sure to catch the interest of young buyers.
The Tata Tiago EV, on the other hand, is 795mm longer, 172mm wider, and gets a 390mm longer wheelbase. The Tiago EV is also shorter with five doors and thus looks more conventional when compared to the MG Comet EV. The Tiago EV is quite similar in appearance to its internal combustion engine counterpart, which results in it lacking the uniqueness that sets the MG Comet EV apart. Furthermore, the base variant of the Tiago EV, which we are comparing, is available in only one paint color and does not include wheel caps. The base variant of the Tiago EV compromises by having unpainted door handles and ORVMs, but it does have side turn indicators mounted on the body.
Comparison of MG Comet EV vs Tata Tiago EV: Specifications
The MG Comet EV is driven by a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor that produces a maximum power of 42ps and a peak torque of 110Nm. It has a 17.3kWh battery pack and weighs 815kg. With its electric torque and light weight, the MG Comet EV is expected to have good performance, with a reported top speed of around 100kmph. It has 12-inch steel wheels with 145 cross-section tires and front disc brakes. It also features three levels of regenerative braking and a Sport mode for extra bursts of speed. The MG Comet EV claims to have a range of 230km on a single charge and can be fully charged using the bundled 3.3kW charger in 7 hours.
In contrast, the Tata Tiago EV is equipped with a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor, which generates a maximum power of 62ps and a peak torque of 110Nm. It has a 19.2kWh battery pack and weighs more than the MG Comet EV. The Tiago EV has two drive modes, City and Sport, and can go from zero to 60kmph in just 6.2 seconds. It has larger 14-inch steel wheels with thicker 175-section rubber and a conventional disc and drum front and rear setup. The Tiago EV can provide a range of 250km on a single charge and can be charged from 10 to 100 percent via a 15A home socket in 7 hours. It also supports DC fast charging, allowing it to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 58 minutes.
Comparison of MG Comet EV vs Tata Tiago EV: Features
Regarding features and safety, the MG Comet EV comes with LED lights, a lit MG logo, a 10.25-inch fully digital MID, a 10.25-inch central infotainment display that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, keyless entry with a smart key system, power windows, manual AC, 2 speakers, charging sockets, and connected car technology.
The Tata Tiago EV, however, lacks some of these features in its base XE trim, such as LED lighting, DRLs, wheel covers, fog lamps, leather upholstery, push-button start/stop, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlamps, cooled glovebox, and touchscreen infotainment system. However, the Tiago EV still offers automatic climate control, tilt adjustable, rear parking sensors, digital instrument cluster, TPMS, and connected car features even in the base trim. Both vehicles offer dual airbags, ABS + EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, etc. as standard. The ICE-powered Tiago has been GNCAP tested and has scored 4 stars overall.
Ultimately, while the MG Comet EV offers a bold and youthful appeal with good features, the Tata Tiago EV wins in terms of value-for-money with its performance, space, and charging speeds, along with the proven reliability of Tata’s Ziptron electric powertrain and established service center network.
