Renault’s Flagship D-Segment Line-Up Strengthened with Emphasis on Driving Dynamics; Upcoming Release of 295bhp Version
Renault has finally revealed its highly anticipated D-segment flagship, the Rafale. This powerful hybrid coupé-SUV is poised to be “a vehicle engineered for unparalleled driving pleasure.”
Introduction: Unveiling the Rafale
Renault’s latest addition to its lineup, the Rafale, will initially debut as a front-wheel-drive hybrid variant, boasting 197bhp. However, a four-wheel-drive version with an impressive 295bhp is also in the pipeline.
The Renaulution Model-Renewal Plan
The launch of the Rafale represents a significant stride in Renault’s comprehensive Renaulution model-renewal plan, which was strategically formulated by group CEO Luca de Meo, who took the helm three years ago. Following the successful strengthening of Renault’s C-segment range with models like the Mégane, Arkana, and Austral, the company’s next priority is to fortify its D-segment presence. This segment currently accounts for 15% of car sales across Europe.
Design and Platform: Combining Style and Performance
The Rafale utilizes Renault’s CMF-CD platform, a bespoke iteration of a component found in over 15 million Renault Group models, from the Clio upwards. With an overall length of 4.7 meters, a height of 1.61 meters (befitting its sporty SUV nature), and a wheelbase of 2.74 meters, the Rafale perfectly positions itself within the heart of the D-segment. Its distinctive design elements include a captivating new grille, pronounced haunches, and an elongated fastback roof. Carefully crafted to ensure ample rear passenger headroom and optimized aerodynamics, the roof maintains a 17-degree rake angle, enhancing efficiency.
Powertrain: Electrified Performance
The Rafale initially launches with the same 197bhp clutchless hybrid powertrain found in its sibling models, the Austral and Espace. This powertrain comprises a 1.2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine and two electric motors. Power is delivered to the front wheels through a four-speed automatic gearbox connected to the final drive. Positioned between the engine and the primary gearbox, a 67bhp electric drive motor, equipped with its own integrated two-speed dog box, aids in propulsion. Additionally, an integrated starter-generator serves as the second electric motor, responsible for starting the petrol engine, regenerating energy during coasting or braking, and providing supplementary acceleration. The electronically governed powertrain operates seamlessly without the need for a clutch, as the car always initiates under electric power. The meshing of the two-speed dog box is efficiently managed by the electric motor. The Rafale is equipped with a 2kWh battery located beneath the driver’s seat, enabling short-range electric driving.
Performance: Unmatched Thrills
While exact performance figures are yet to be released, the Rafale’s performance is expected to be on par with its 197bhp sibling, the Austral. Renault engineers estimate the Rafale’s curb weight to be around 1600kg, ensuring exhilarating performance.
Upcoming Release: The 295bhp Powerhouse
The four-wheel-drive version of the Rafale, generating an impressive 295bhp, shares the same front-mounted powertrain as the initial variant. However, it distinguishes itself with an electrified rear axle, incorporating a separate electric motor within the rear differential. This model features a larger battery and is anticipated to be a plug-in hybrid with an electric-only range of 30-40 miles.
Driving Experience: A Driver's Car
While the Rafale shares its platform and wheelbase with its family-oriented counterparts, the Austral and Espace, it proudly emphasizes its focus on delivering an exceptional driver’s experience. With 40mm-wider front and rear tracks, along with unique spring, damper, and anti-roll bar specifications, the Rafale ensures heightened agility and handling capabilities.
Conclusion: Renault Rafale Sets a New Standard
Renault’s introduction of the 2023 Rafale as its flagship coupé-SUV signifies a significant milestone in the brand’s pursuit of excellence. This dynamic hybrid vehicle, equipped with cutting-edge technology, remarkable performance, and captivating design, is poised to redefine driving pleasure in the D-segment. As Renault continues its Renaulution model-renewal plan, the Rafale stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment to innovation and elevating the driving experience.
