In the dynamic landscape of the Indian automotive industry, Maruti Suzuki India emerges as a force to be reckoned with, showcasing an outstanding performance in domestic car sales for November. This report unveils Maruti’s remarkable achievement, where its volume nearly matches the combined sales of major competitors—Hyundai Motor India, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra.

Record-breaking Industry Performance

November witnessed an unprecedented surge in the passenger vehicle (PV) industry, primarily fueled by the robust growth in the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment. Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker, played a pivotal role, contributing significantly to the industry’s highest-ever November volume. With 335,354 units sold, the industry marked a remarkable 3.95% year-on-year (y-o-y) growth compared to the previous year’s record of 322,600 units.

Maruti's Outstanding Contribution

Maruti Suzuki’s domestic PV volume for November soared to 134,158 units, reflecting a commendable 1.33% y-o-y growth. The company attributed this success to improved semiconductor availability, leading to increased production, coupled with the festive season in the first half of November.

Segment-wise Breakdown

During November, Maruti’s SUV segment emerged as the major contributor, accounting for 53.26% of the PV volume, with an impressive 178,598 units sold. Notably, seven Maruti models, including Swift, WagonR, Baleno, Brezza, Dzire, Ertiga, and Eeco, secured positions among the top 10 best-selling cars in India.

Market Share Dominance

Maruti Suzuki’s dominance extended across various segments, with a notable 69.2% share in the hatchback segment, 53% in sedans, 55% in multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs), 95% in vans, and a substantial 20.2% in the SUV segment. Cumulatively, the carmaker held a 65% share in the non-SUV segment.

Hyundai's Steady Growth

Hyundai Motor India reported a 3.02% y-o-y growth in domestic PV wholesale despatches, reaching 49,451 units. Tarun Garg, the company’s COO, emphasized the encouraging customer response during the festive season, leading to higher retail sales. Hyundai’s SUV lineup, contributing over 60% to overall sales, exhibited robust momentum, with the newly introduced Hyundai Exter achieving a milestone of 100,000 bookings.

Tata Motors' Steadfast Standing

Tata Motors maintained a consistent stance in November, with domestic PV volume holding steady at 46,068 units. Despite facing flat growth, Tata Motors remained a formidable contender in the market.

Mahindra & Mahindra demonstrated robust growth, registering a remarkable 32.22% y-o-y increase in domestic PV volume, reaching 39,981 units. Veejay Nakra, President of the Automotive Division at Mahindra, attributed this success to strong demand for the SUV portfolio. Despite supply challenges on select parts, Mahindra remains vigilant, implementing strategic measures to address and overcome these obstacles.
