In April 2023, the Indian passenger vehicle industry continued to witness a strong growth trajectory, despite challenges in supply, with sales volumes touching a handsome figure of 331,747 units. Among the top 10 best-selling cars in the month, Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest car manufacturer, had an incredible six models, while Hyundai Motor India and Tata Motors had two each.

SUVs Emerge as Clear Winners
Of the top 10 best-selling cars in April 2023, five were SUVs, with four hatchbacks and one van completing the list. The dominance of the SUV segment is clearly visible as it captured a market share of 47.4% of the passenger vehicle industry in April. Maruti Suzuki WagonR Leads the Way
The Maruti Suzuki WagonR was the largest-selling car in April, with sales of 20,879 units. The WagonR is a popular choice for its spacious interiors, excellent fuel efficiency, and affordable pricing. Its performance in April 2023 was followed by the Maruti Suzuki Swift, which sold 18,573 units, and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, with 16,180 units sold.

SUVs Gain Momentum
The Tata Nexon was the fourth highest-selling car in April, with sales of 15,002 units, followed by the Hyundai Creta, which sold 14,186 units. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza secured the sixth spot with sales of 11,836 units. These numbers confirm the growing popularity of SUVs in India, which offer consumers more space, better ground clearance, and a powerful driving experience.
More Maruti, Tata, and Hyundai Cars in the Top 10 List
The Maruti Suzuki Alto continued to be a popular choice among Indian buyers, with 11,548 units sold, securing it the seventh spot on the list. The Tata Punch came in eighth with sales of 10,934 units, while the Maruti Suzuki Eeco was ninth with sales of 10,504 units. The Hyundai Venue made a comeback after a long time and completed the top 10 list with sales of 10,342 units.

The Indian passenger vehicle industry witnessed an impressive growth trajectory in April 2023, with Maruti Suzuki India leading the way with six cars in the top 10 list. SUVs continue to be the preferred choice among Indian buyers, capturing almost half of the passenger vehicle industry.
