Volkswagen has officially teased its highly anticipated entry-level electric vehicle (EV) ahead of its global debut in 2027. Positioned as an affordable and compact all-electric car, this model is expected to serve as a successor to the discontinued VW Up hatchback. However, this particular EV will not be available in the Indian market, as Volkswagen is focusing on an India-specific IMP platform for its electric lineup in the region.
Volkswagen’s Affordable EV: ID.One Expected Name and Design Details
The entry-level Volkswagen EV may be called ID.One or ID.1 upon its launch.
It will feature a rugged, crossover-inspired design with a raised stance.
Expected to come with a front-mounted motor and a compact battery pack.
Built on a shortened version of Volkswagen’s MEB platform.
Volkswagen’s new electric model will be positioned below the ID.2all hatchback in the company’s expanding EV lineup. This affordable EV is expected to be a five-door hatchback with a slightly elevated ride height and bold body cladding to enhance its muscular appearance. It will be one of the nine electric models Volkswagen plans to introduce by 2027.
Sleek Exterior Design with Modern Styling Elements
The teaser image of Volkswagen’s entry-level EV showcases a contemporary and minimalist design. Key highlights include:
Rectangular LED Headlamps: These feature intricate 3D LED graphics, seamlessly integrated into a black grille.
Illuminated VW Logo: Enhancing its futuristic appeal, the front fascia features an illuminated Volkswagen emblem.
Vertical Daytime Running Lights (DRLs): Positioned on the front bumper to add a modern touch.
Subtle Sculpted Fenders: Offering a more dynamic and aerodynamic profile.
This all-electric model will share its MEB platform with the ID.2all, though in a compact, cost-effective version tailored for affordability.
Powertrain and Platform: What to Expect
Volkswagen has designed this entry-level EV with efficiency and affordability in mind. Here’s what we can expect:
Single Motor Setup: A front-mounted electric motor will likely power the vehicle.
Compact Battery Pack: A smaller battery unit than the one found in the ID.2all will help keep costs low.
Common Platform Across Brands: The same underpinnings and powertrain are expected to be shared with entry-level EVs from Skoda and Seat, targeting the European market.
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer has emphasized the significance of this vehicle for the company’s future, stating, “An affordable, high-quality, and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe: that’s the Champions League of automotive engineering!”
Production Plans and Market Strategy
The production facility for this new Volkswagen EV has not yet been finalized. However, Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID.2all and the ID.2X crossover will be manufactured in Spain. These models will be built alongside the Skoda Epiq and the Cupra Raval SUVs, reinforcing Volkswagen Group’s commitment to localized production in Europe.
Volkswagen’s technical development chief, Kai Grünitz, has also hinted that the new entry-level EV will be a natural successor to the highly successful Up hatchback, incorporating some of its design cues and attributes while modernizing its appeal for the electric era.
Volkswagen’s EV Plans for India: A Different Strategy
While this entry-level Volkswagen EV is unlikely to make its way to India, the company is actively working on an electric vehicle strategy tailored to the Indian market. Volkswagen is developing EVs based on a localized India Main Platform (IMP), an adaptation of China’s CMP (China Main Platform) with strong localization elements.
Key highlights of Volkswagen’s India-specific EV plans:
Development of IMP Architecture: A locally adapted platform to support cost-effective EV production.
Focus on SUV Segments: Plans include a compact electric SUV and a midsize electric SUV for the Indian market.
Localization for Affordability: Strong emphasis on local manufacturing and supply chain integration to keep pricing competitive.
A Game-Changer in Affordable EVs
Volkswagen’s entry-level EV, expected to be named ID.One, is set to redefine affordable electric mobility in Europe. With a crossover-inspired design, advanced LED lighting, and a cost-efficient MEB-based platform, this new model will appeal to budget-conscious EV buyers. Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s India-specific electric vehicle strategy ensures that the brand remains competitive in key global markets with locally adapted solutions.
As the world moves toward sustainable transportation, Volkswagen’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup is a clear indication of its ambition to lead the EV revolution. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated model as we approach its 2027 global debut.
