Volvo’s second electric vehicle (EV) is making its way to India, as the C40 Recharge joins the lineup alongside the previously launched XC40 Recharge. The automaker revealed the C40 Recharge today and announced that it will be available for sale in August, with online bookings opening soon and deliveries starting in September.
Volvo C40 Recharge: The Coupe Sibling of XC40 Recharge
The C40 Recharge shares its mechanical components with its SUV counterpart, the XC40 Recharge. It offers the same impressive performance and features while sporting a coupe-like design. However, it distinguishes itself with unique characteristics.
Leather-Free Interior for C40 Recharge
Volvo has taken a sustainable approach with the C40 Recharge’s interior. It boasts a 100 percent leather-free cabin, aligning with the company’s commitment to eliminating leather from its electric vehicle lineup by 2025. This initiative aims to reduce animal harm and carbon emissions associated with leather production.
Volvo C40 Recharge: Exterior Design
While the C40 Recharge shares most of its design cues with the XC40 Recharge, it showcases distinctive elements, particularly at the rear. The coupe-inspired roofline adds a sleek and stylish touch, accompanied by a steeply raked rear windscreen. As a result, the tailgate and tail-lamp assembly have undergone a complete redesign.
The tail-lamps feature a slimmer profile, offering a wider wraparound effect. They incorporate new reverse lights and segmented LED light elements located beside the windshield, deviating from the continuous strip found on the XC40 Recharge. The LEDs also extend into the tailgate, giving the C40 Recharge a broader presence.
To enhance aerodynamics, Volvo has introduced a two-part spoiler. The boot lid features a blacked-out spoiler, while the roof incorporates a unique twin-pod design. The rear design of the C40 Recharge appears more dynamic and sporty compared to its SUV sibling. The sloping roofline also contributes to a slight redesign of the windowline.
Other exterior elements such as the headlamps with Thor’s hammer LED Daytime Running Lamps, the front bumper, the hood, the door contouring, and the dual-tone 19-inch alloy wheels remain unchanged from the SUV variant.
Volvo C40 Recharge: Interior Features
Inside the C40 Recharge, you’ll find a familiar layout that echoes the XC40 Recharge’s design philosophy. The dashboard showcases Volvo’s signature style, featuring a 9.0-inch portrait-style touchscreen flanked by slim AC vents. Wood inlays add a touch of elegance, and the fully digital instrument cluster provides a modern and informative display.
In terms of equipment, the C40 Recharge comes equipped with an Android-based infotainment system. This system offers direct access to Google Maps and Assistant, as well as various apps from the PlayStore, thanks to the onboard e-SIM. Additional features include a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera, a comprehensive suite of sensor-based ADAS tech, connected car technology, powered front seats with driver-side memory function, heating and cooling capabilities, dual-zone climate control, and a premium Harman Kardon sound system.
While the SUV variant offers 452 litres of boot space, the C40 Recharge’s boot capacity is slightly reduced to 413 litres. However, the 31-litre frunk space remains unchanged.
Volvo C40 Recharge: Powertrain and Specifications
The C40 Recharge retains the same underpinnings and powertrain configuration as the XC40 Recharge. Built on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, the C40 Recharge features a dual-motor setup—one on each axle—and a 78kWh battery pack. This configuration enables an impressive claimed range of 530km on a single charge. With all-wheel drive capability, the two electric motors generate a combined output of 408hp and 660Nm of torque. Additionally, the C40 Recharge supports fast charging with a 150kW DC charger, allowing a 0 to 100 percent charge in just 33 minutes.
Volvo C40 Recharge: Rivals in the Market
When it hits the market, the C40 Recharge will face competition from other electric vehicles, including the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The anticipated pricing of the C40 Recharge will likely be slightly higher than its SUV counterpart, which currently starts at Rs 56.90 lakh (ex-showroom). While there are no electric coupe-SUVs available in this price range, prospective buyers may consider ICE coupe-SUVs like the Audi Q3 Sportback and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, which offer a similar price point.
By combining Volvo’s commitment to electric mobility, sustainable materials, and cutting-edge design, the C40 Recharge presents an enticing option for Indian customers seeking an eco-friendly and stylish luxury vehicle. With its impressive range and advanced features, the C40 Recharge aims to provide an exceptional driving experience while minimizing its environmental impact.
